The Story of "Olikperebu mi"

The princess has set very high standards for all suitors. The queen, her mother is eager to celebrate a wedding. Her father, the just and wise king cautions mother and child, but Olikperebu mi (my jewel) as the king fondly calls his daughter is blinded by her beauty and keeps turning each prospective husband down in embarrassment. Suddenly a wealthy Prince arrives the town with a large entourage, he surpasses all her expectations, her standards are lowered and the wedding fest takes place. However, the charming Prince turns out not to be as Nobel as presented. A series of unfortunate events lead to a devastating revelation and embarrassment. Tradition must be preserved and the Kings word is his bond. The Itsekiri tribe is the setting for this riveting story of love and greed. Folk music, dance and narration are interwoven displaying the rich cultural heritage which promises the audience and unforgettable theatrical experience. This epic folk story is recreated and directed for stage by Toritseju Akiya Ejoh and is set to premiere at the Lagos International Theatre festival, November 2024.
